The challenge
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition in which blood clots form in the deep veins, most often in the legs. If a clot breaks off, it can travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism, which can be life-threatening.
DVT is hard to diagnose: episodes are often silent, without any symptoms. Patients who spend long periods in bed are especially at risk.
The solution
ThrombUS+ is developing a wearable system that continuously monitors the legs of bedridden patients. Artificial intelligence analyses data from three types of sensors: ultrasound, bioimpedance plethysmography and light reflectance rheography.
To help prevent clots, patients are encouraged to move their limbs while playing serious computer games. The project will also generate large datasets to train and test the AI algorithms in large-scale clinical trials.
